Kenyan woman found murdered in Birmingham, Alabama
Birmingham - "She just was a kind-hearted person."

This woman, who asked ABC 33/40 not to identify her, is talking about her life-long friend, Ruth Munene, who was found dead in her apartment late Friday night.

Birmingham Police have not yet officially released the name of the deceased.

But according to friends and family, the deceased inside the 240 21st Avenue South apartment, was Munene.

"I was thinking she was in a car wreck," her friend said. "That was my first reaction."

She recalls the night as a constant game of phone tag. Friends calling saying Munene was unconscious, but no one knew whether she was alive or dead. Then the friend says she received a heartbreaking phone call around 3 a.m. Saturday.

"I could tell she was crying on the other end of the phone and she said 'Do you know what has happened?' I said I was told she was unconscious, do you know anything else? She said believe it or not she has left us," Munene's friend said.

According to family, Munene was murdered...stabbed three times.

Outside the apartment, crime scene tape hangs from a handrail and a piece of window glass is broken just beside the front door. But right now, that is all the facts they know.

Munene's friend says she's devastated and doesn't understand why anyone would kill her friend.

"I was really, really shocked to hear she had passed away," she said.

A Kenyan dies in Minnesota
By Diaspora Messenger
06/02/2010
A Kenyan man, Dr David Menge, died on Saturday, May 29, 2010 after a short illness. Until his death, he was a researcher and professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School (Twin Cities).Dr.Menge was very influential and active in research for Malaria treatment and eradication in Kenya but his life was cut short due to stomach cancer complication.
Dr. David Menge was diagnosed with colorectal cancer some time in Fall/Early Winter of 2008. He was immediately put under chemotherapy treatment and in December 2008, he underwent surgery to remove a tumor that had grown in the colon. This surgery was followed by further chemo treatments in the Spring of 2009 and by the end the Summer of 2009; he was told that his cancer had been effectively treated.
In early April 2010 he developed a cough which was initially attributed to a cold that his children had picked up at school. However, after his children's cold had gone, his cough persisted and appeared to be more severe. He visited a doctor, was diagnosed with bronchitis and was given antibiotics. He did not get relief from this treatment and so on or about May 7 2010, he went back to the doctor and this time round, he was diagnosed with pneumonia and hospitalized for eight days. During this brief stay at the hospital, it was discovered that, stealthily, his cancer had recurred and metastasized to the lungs and other vital organs. Even so, his oncologist believed that the cancer was treatable.
On the night of Monday, May 24, 2010, following the heat wave that swept across Minnesota and neighboring states, Dr. Menge developed what he felt was a high heart rate and shortness of breath. At about midnight, he asked a friend to take him to the St. John's Hospital (Maplewood Cancer Care Center) Emergency Room for care. Four days later, he died at the hospital’s ICU unit following complications due to his compromised vital organs.
He is survived by his wife, three little children, parents and three brothers. He was preceded in death by his eldest brother and grandparents. He hails from Nyagancha Village, Kitutu Masaba.
Family and friends are grateful for the outpouring of love and support that they have received since the passing of their brother, husband and dear friend. This came too suddenly. It is painful.
A funeral service to honor the memory of Dr Menge and a fundraising to help ship his remains to Kenya for internment will be on Saturday, June 5th, 2010 at:

A Kenyan Woman passes away in Dallas,Texas
The late Mrs Jennie Sainah
The Late Mrs Jennie Sainah
A Kenyan woman has passed away in Dallas, TX after a long illness bravely borne. Mrs Jennie Sainah passed away on Wednesday May 12, 2010.
Jennie was the wife to Joseph Sainah of Denton, TX, mother to Jeffrey, Jessie, and Jerry. She was the daughter of Lawrence and Felicitas Korir of Ngechek village in Nandi, Kenya. She was the sister-in-law/sister to Sam and Julie Bore of Grand Prairie, TX. Her other siblings are Jossie Jacky, John, Janet, and Paul.
Jennie Sainah hailed from Eldoret, Kenya. She settled in Denton, Texas, USA, in 1992.
Mrs Sainah experienced the initial signs of illness that would eventually claim her life in September 2005. By February 2006, she had lost functions of her upper limbs; her legs and lower arms were also weakening.
After a number of medical examinations, she was diagnosed with POEMS Syndrome and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), two very rare neuromuscular diseases, in May 2006. Her condition deteriorated fast. By November 2006, she was bedridden and in need of a bipap machine to enable her inhale sufficient oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.
By August 2007, her diaphragm muscles had degenerated to the point that she received a tracheotomy that facilitated the use of a ventilator for breathing. Since then, she was in and out of hospitals due to the fact that her immune system had weakened resulting in recurring bouts of pneumonia and several bacterial and viral infections.
On April 15, 2010 at 5:00pm, Jennie suffered a massive cardiac arrest that resulted in extensive damage to most of her brain. She eventually succumbed to the illnesses on Wednesday May 12 at 4:30pm.
With numerous hospitalizations and extensive treatment spanning four and half years, Jennie’s medical bills stand at over $50, 000. A fundraiser to offset the medical bills will be held on Friday, May 21, 2010 from 8:00 – 11:00PM at Upendo Baptist Church in Garland, Texas – 916 N. Jupiter Road 75042.
